Why Learning Disabilities?

The summer going into my Junior year I was a buddy to two girls with a cognitive learning disability. We would hangout at my house and do activities that I would normally do with my friends, for example, watch movies, bake, make a blanket, and just talk. I really enjoyed the experience I had that summer, so I wanted to continue my learning about learning disabilities and other disabilities as well.

My Junior year we did a junior thesis that had to be on an event in history. The subject I chose to do was the Special Olympics and the path it took to be where it is today. Eunice Kennedy Shriver was the founder of the Special Olympics. She created the event in her backyard because her sister, Rosemary, had a disability. Ever since my junior thesis I was always interested in other ways to help those with a disability feel like they fit in. That is how I became interested in the aspect of communication.

Due to my junior thesis being focused on all disabilities I decided that I should focus my senior capstone on learning disabilities. I learned so much about this topic and I hope those that decide to read my essay will too.

What the Special Olympics meant to and changed for Timothy Shriver...
